* Frag-Vipers generally know either Boxing or Martial Arts, but not both - unless they're exceptional. If one goes with Boxing, he or she will have a d code for Strength and a for Agility, but if they go with Martial Arts, they will have an x code for Strength and an a+ code for Agility.

Origin:

Like the vast majority of Cobra operatives, Frag-Vipers are but ordinary humans, lacking special powers altogether. They are aided in their duties by high tech sensors and an advanced, grenade-dispensing unit, but their prowess otherwise comes from being skilled athletes.

Powers:

(none)

Hindrances / Augmentations:

(none)

Equipment:

Cesta (a): fed by a backpack full of explosives, the Frag-Vipers' cesta is their greatest weapon. It allows them to almost silently hurl explosives at their opponents, extending their effective range when doing so out to far missile distance.

Grenades (i): whether flung unaided or using their cesta and advanced helmet targeting sensors, these explosives make Frag-Vipers incredibly deadly. They can detonate to inflict intensity 10 slashing damage to everything within near missile distance of wherever they explode.

Helmet (s): the large, insectoid helmet of the Frag-Viper provides them intensity 8, or +2, protection against physical attacks. But its primary purpose is to assist Frag-Vipers in the execution of their duties, doing so with a whole suite of sensors which aid the flinging of grenades.

Primarily, this helmet is equipped with an automatic range finder, which reduces the Frag-Vipers' difficulty of actions to hit in ranged combat, whether firing guns or flinging things. Furthermore, they provide intensity 7 nightvision and infravision capabilities.

Knife (s): as do almost all other Cobra operatives, Frag-Vipers carry a blade with them while in the field. Made from m.s. 12 materials, they can use this implement to slice through items of up to like m.s., given the time, or to inflict +2 slashing damage in melee.

Sidearm (a): holstered on their left hip for use when their other hardware fails them, Frag-Vipers may discharge a single round from this firearm to inflict their Agility +4 in damage, or a three-round burst to inflict their Agility +5 in damage.

Submachine Gun (a): when grenades are impractical, Frag-Vipers can fire a single round from these weapons to inflict their Agility +4 in damage, a short burst of such to inflict their Agility +5 in damage, or fire continuously to inflict their Agility +6 in damage.

Skills:

Boxing (s): Frag-Vipers are well-versed in the art of self-defense. For some, this takes the form of the boxing skill, which lets them divide their pre-card play action score between two unarmed melee assaults, the second of which will occur as a contingent action.

Guns (a): all Cobra operatives have the ability to wield firearms in combat, and Frag-Vipers are no exception to this rule. They may discharge any standard, semi-automatic, or fully automatic rifle or pistol at one difficulty level lower than is usually required.

Martial Arts (a): Frag-Vipers are well-versed in the art of self-defense. For some, this takes the form of the martial arts skill, granting them a reduction in the difficulty of actions intended to dodge attacks, catch thrown weaponry, or to strike in unarmed melee.

Military (w): those Frag-Vipers who didn't master this skill before joining Cobra have definitely earned it by the time they are promoted to this rank. It allows them to function effectively within a combat unit, and gives them insight into Cobra's byzantine organizational structure.

Quick Draw (a): not only are Frag-Vipers accurate to a fault with their cestas, but they're quick on the draw with them, too! This translates into a +4 initiative modifier for Frag-Vipers utilizing their cestas, regularly allowing them to strike first in an exchange.

Skill / Cesta (a): based upon the similarly named jai-alai implement, the Frag-Vipers' cestas improve both their range and throwing rate with grenades. On top of that, their extensive training with this weapon reduces the difficulty of actions decidated to flinging explosives!

Thrown Weapons (a): while they specialize in the use of their cestas, Frag-Vipers can still fling weapons without them. They may reduce the difficulty of flinging actions, which makes them extremely accurate when combined with the use of their helmet sensors.

Contacts:

Cobra invests a lot in the training of Frag-Vipers, which is why they're not quite as likely to leave one for dead should he or she find themselves in a pinch. Unless, that is, it would benefit the Command in some fashion - likely involving them saving their own bacon, most of the time.

Calling:

Various Callings: most Frag-Vipers are members of Cobra for their own, nefarious purposes, so pick an evil calling and roll with it! They're most often motivated by Greed or perhaps Vengeance, but some Frag-Vipers are Soldiers, seeking to excel at their job above all else.

Costume:

Frag-Viper uniforms feature a light brown jacket and light brown trousers as their base, beneath blue belts, holsters, sheathes, and pouches. This look is further accented with black leather boots and gloves, and their distinctive silver, oversized, almost insectoid helmets.

Notes:

Cobra Vipers with a good arm are often given the opportunity to become Frag-Vipers. Those who accept this offer are given extensive training in the use of a cesta, modified from that utilized in the Basque sport of jai-alai for use in the flinging of advanced explosive devices!

Those who can bend their head around the use of this implement then get a raise, and are issued a host of advanced equipment that allows them to fling grenades at their opponents with great range, speed, and accuracy - the hallmark of the Frag-Viper!

While many Cobras wield of rocket-propelled grenades, the problem with such weaponry is that once you fire them, everybody knows your position! Frag-Vipers, though, can almost silently rain fragmentary doom down on their foes, moving on before anyone guesses where they are.

2006 Variations

Costume:

The second Frag-Viper uniforms features a green camouflage jacket and trousers as their base, beneath light brown belts, holsters, sheathes, pouches, boots, and gloves. They retain their oversized, almost insectoid helmets, however, though they are colored black with blue lenses now.
