Captain America 3 (deceased)
Spirit of '76
William Naslund was the Spirit of '76, a man motivated by the fine example of Captain America to do his utmost to fight his country's many enemies. Like his idol, William lacks super-human powers of any stripe, merely doing battle with his Axis foes under his own steam.
Limitations / Enhancements:
Cape: as the Spirit of '76, William wore a brilliant red cape that happened to be bullet proof. It offered him rank value 6 protection from attacks from behind (of the physical sort, at any rate). He could also wrap it about his entire body, in a pinch, to stop whole hails of bullets.
Shield: as the third Captain America, William wielded the solid steel shield of the Captain America, which was of material value 30. It offered him the following protection from the various attack forms, provided it could be placed in the way of incoming attacks:
RV 30 / RV 10 / RV 4 / RV 0 / RV 0
Martial Arts styles A, B, and D: William studied Captain America's fighting style for a time, and eventually mastered these disciplines. He gains a +1 RS in unarmed melee attacks, can Pound or Concuss a target regardless of his comparative Brawn or Fortitude traits, and more!
William may also, after studying an opponent for two turns, find the weak points in their fighting style. This lets him inflict Pound or Concuss results even against heavily armored foes, and he need not actually inflict damage to produce said results with a melee attack.
Shields: through both imitation and practice, William managed to make good use of some maneuvers the original Captain America developed with his shield. He can use it as both an offensive and a defensive weapon in combat, and gains a +1 RS when throwing it at his foes.
William was a member of the short-lived Crusaders team, and as such can count on those ersatz heroes for aid should he need it. Of course, most of them have since retired out of shame over being so easily duped into participating in the team's, er, crusade against the Invaders.
Upon filling the role of Captain America, William could rely upon his fellow Invaders or All-Winners Squad members for assistance in a pinch. They all know he's not the original Captain, and occasionally remind him of this, but will still go out on a limb for him when possible.
As the Spirit of '76, William wore a costume that included a long-sleeved, collared white shirt with ten blue stars on the chest, blue trousers with white racing stripes, black leather boots and gloves, a black domino mask, a black cocked hat, and a brilliant red cape.
As Captain America, William naturally wore that uniform. It included a blue shirt with white lower sleeves, a white star over the heart and red and white stripes on the torso, a blue cowl with white wings and a white 'A' on the forehead, red buccaneer boots and gloves, and blue trousers.
William was an extremely patriotic American, and felt he could best serve his country by fighting its many foes as his idol, Captain America did - namely, up front and personal in a bright costume. Of course, he seemed somewhat ill-at-ease when actually being the Captain, however.

Little is known about the origins of the man that became the Spirit of '76. It has been revealed over time that he idolized Captain America, watching him with pride on the news reels as the red, white and blue Son of Liberty bashed in Nazi heads week after week.
Wishing to do his part, he began to study the Captain's fighting style, training intensely to become as good at fighting evil as his hero. He didn't quite manage that, but William nonetheless became quite adept at the unique, unarmed fighting style he evolved over time.
Feeling he was ready, he assembled a costumed identity of his own: the Spirit of '76. Traveling to Europe, William went about looking for a means with which he could take the fight to his foes without being an easy mark, and failed after he was taken in by a man known only as Alfie.
This fellow was a Nazi intent on assembling a team of English super heroes - to eventually turn them against the mighty Invaders. William wasn't English by any means, but he was a costumed do-gooder in England at the time, so Alfie figured that was good enough.
Once his Crusaders were ready, Alfie set his plot into motion, but naturally the Invaders were more than a match for these hastily assembled, ersatz heroes. Once it was revealed they'd teamed up in some sort of Axis scheme, the Crusaders quickly disbanded and gave up super heroics.
Well... most of them did. William certainly did not. In fact, he continued fighting the good fight for years in Europe, up until April of 1945, when he was approached by President Harry S. Truman to fill a role; you see, the original Captain had been lost in battle.
Finding it an honor he couldn't refuse, William gladly took the job, though he never seemed to play the part to the expectations of his fellow Invaders - Namor in particular. When the Invaders became the All-Winners Squad, William continued on as Captain America.
He did this for some time, until during a fateful encounter with the evil Adam II, an android created by Phineas T. Horton. While he fought off Adam II's minions with the new Bucky, William was mortally injured when one of the artificial beings crushed his very body.
William got a warning out to his fellows in the All-Winners Squad before he fell, however. Found mortally wounded by the Patriot, William passed on knowing the world would be saved from Adam 2's dastardly plot to conquer the world. Though he died, the Captain's legacy did not.
Moved by his sacrifice, the Patriot then took on the role of America's Sentinel of Liberty, and led the All-Winners Squad to victory against Adam II!
