Origin:
The nature of Max's paranormality is hard to pin down. It's possible that he manifested his powers in the wake of the White Event, as did most posthumans on his world. However, it's also possible that he was granted his unique abilities via Daedalus Darquill's own psionics.
Powers:
Natural Psionics (Metapsi Powers):
Shape Change (a) (a): Max's core power, he can change his shape when in contact with the shadow he casts. He may swap between his human and his cacodemon forms when this condition is met, doing so with intensity 6 ability, which enables the use of his other powers.
Growth (t) (a): when he changes into his cacodemon form, Max's already impressive height doubles. Growing to thirteen feet tall, Max demonstrates intensity 2 growth when transformed, granting him a +2 size factor - with all the benefits and penalties this entails.
Resistance (s) (s): though he's already tough in his normal form, Max adds considerable resistance to the metabolic damage caused by the attacks of Justice Warriors - which, when you get down to it, is only John Tensen. This is an intensity 20, or +5, resistance.
Personal Weaponry (a) (s): while he's in his cacodemon form, Max can make the use of his claws and fangs practical. When intending to inflict lethal damage in melee combat, Max can activate this ability, and both his claws and fangs can be used to inflict +2 slashing damage.
Natural Psionics (Psimantic Powers):
Energy Generation (a): supplementing his dire melee presence as a cacodemon, Max has the ability to cast magical energy at his opponents! These intensity 12 bursts of mystic power can be used to inflict power intensity sorcerous damage with every deadly assault Max attempts.
Hindrances / Augmentations:
Abnormal Attribute: Max's shadow betrays his dual nature. When in his human form, his shadow resembles what his cacodemon's shadow should. Alternately, when he transforms into his cacodemon form, Max's shadow is based on the shape of his normal human form.
Extrinsic Powers: Max can only use his shape change power while he's in his human form, the rest being somehow stored in his shadow. Upon assuming his cacodemon form, Max's shadow lacks any of his powers, making him fully vulnerable to any attacks attempted against it.
Equipment:
(none)
Skills:
Boxing (s): seemingly naught but hired muscle, albeit a lot of it, Max generally need not bother with his cacodemon form on the job. He may divide his pre-card play action score between two unarmed melee attacks, the second of which will occur as a contingent action.
Contacts:
As Damon Conquest's personal cacodemon, Max can presumably rely upon his boss for assistance should he somehow need it on the job. This allegiance may extend to the rest of the denizens of the Winterlands, who might find Max useful enough to be bailed out of most messes.
Calling:
Demolisher: Max doesn't really have complicated ambitions or cravings. No, he's a big man that likes to make others feel small, usually by cowing them into submission - or, failing that, smashing them so badly that they may never recover from their injuries.
Costume:
When working in his human configuration, Max wears a large business suit, one tailored to his immense frame. Once he transforms into his cacodemon shape, Max goes completely nude, letting his sheer size and brazen nudity intimidate those foolish enough to make him use it.
Personality:
Max is a very comfident being, cheerfully using his might to enforce his petty whims. At the same time, he demonstrates absolute loyalty to Damon Conquest, or at least the man's father, and follows his directions without question or pushback of any kind.
Real Name: unrevealed
Occupation: criminal enforcer
Legal Status: citizen of the United States with a probable criminal recored, legally deceased
Marital Status: unrevealed
Alias(es), if any: Max (may be his first name)
Group Affiliation: the wizards of the Winterlands
Height: 6' 6" (as a human), 13' (as a cacodemon)
Hair: black (as a human), none (as a cacodemon)
Eyes: brown (as a human), yellow (as a cacodemon)
Weight: 350 lbs. (as a human), 2,800 lbs (as a cacodemon)
Other Distinguishing Characteristics: Max is huge! He is incredibly tall and bulky, even in his human form. He looks obese at first glance, but his movements betray his immense strength. He wears a goatee without a corresponding moustache, and keeps his hair cropped short.
When he transforms, Max doubles in size and octuples in weight. His skin turns blue, accented by purple spots all over his body, and his ears become pointy. He loses his hair, though he retains his goatee. Furthermore, his teeth and nails grow to sharpened, deadly points.
Finally, Max's cacodemon form reeks of open graves and rotting meat.
Story:
The history of the entity claiming to be Maximus Argath is something of a blank slate. It's possible that he was an ordinary paranormal swept into Daedalus Darquill's deranged mindscape, one whose powers were simply altered to better fit that man's insane fantasy world.
Alternately, he could've been a loyal enforcer from the man's earthly criminal operation, granted powers outright by Darquill's incredibly dangerous psionics. But since he possesses an aura, albeit one that is black as night, it's likely that Maximus Argath is at least a real being.
Regardless of how Maximus Argath and his powers came to be, he definitely perceives himself to be a cacodemon, a monstrous servant of Damon Conquest. He's also an arrogant and petty man, one who is more than happy to brutalize others with his immense power when allowed to.
During one such instance, Conquest sent Maximus Argath (who is usually just called Max) to deal with Andrew Markham, a local dealer in Los Angeles that refused to move his diabolical merchandise. Approaching the criminal, Max waited for the opportunity to strike him down.
When one of Markham's girls went berserk trying the drugs Conquest wanted him to move, her furious knife attack proved to be just such an opportunity, and when no one was looking Max killed Markham on the spot. However, someone was present that Max didn't expect: Justice!
This foe of Conquest's was thought dead, so Max delighted in attacking him, changing into his cacodemon form to humble the Justice Warrior. Toying with him for a time, Max exulted in the sheer terror he inflicted on the violent hero, though this didn't last for long.
Once Justice sussed out the secret of Max's powers, the villain tried to finish him before he could exploit that weakness, but was too late. When Justice blasted Max's shadow with the full force of his sword hand, he reduced Max to ash in the blink of an eye.
