the Covert Light Aerial Weapon
A one-man battle wing, the CLAW (or Covert Light Aerial Weapon) is small and light, making it difficult for enemy radar to detect it. An answer of sorts to GI Joe's JUMP and Sky Hawk units, the CLAW helps Cobra to field a quick, relatively cheap air element.
Given propulsion by twin DES/Mini-55 turbojet engines, and lift by its aerodynamic frame with extending wings, the CLAW can get a Cobra operative (or just its Flashfire bomb, if operated remotely) somewhere fast, and benefits from these vehicular characteristics:
Handling RV 20 |
Velocity RV 50 |
Durability RV 20 |
Protection RV 0 |
Flashfire Bomb: instead of a pilot, the CLAW can be fitted with one DES/28-B 750 pound Flashfire bomb. Delivered via remote control, this bomb can be dropped on a target, or delivered via ramming attack, to inflict rank value 40 Slashing (fragmentary) damage.
Flight: the principal function of the CLAW is that it can fly! This vehicle is powered by twin jets mounted just above its pilot (or payload), which allow it to soar through the skies at speeds of up to 340.9 miles per hour (rank value 50 flight).
HE-8 Venom Missiles: each CLAW is armed with two ten pound, HE-8 Venom unguided missiles. Fire and forget projectiles, these missiles will generally just fly straight upon being fired, decimating whatever is in their path. They have these characteristics:
Handling RV 6 |
Velocity RV 75 |
Durability RV 20 |
Damage RV 30 Slashing (fragmentary) |
Machine Gun: this top-mounted firearm can dispense lead at anything directly in front of the CLAW. It can fire short bursts of ammunition to inflict rank value 10 Piercing damage, or a sustained burst of fully automatic fire to inflict rank value 20 Piercing damage.
Remote Control: whether manned with a pilot or loaded with a Flashfire bomb, a CLAW may be piloted remotely by a Cobra operator. This can be done with rank value 10 ability (25 mile range) from a ground station, or rank value 20 ability (100 miles) from another aircraft.
2008 Variations
Almost twenty-five years after their initial issue, Cobra began building all new CLAWs. The 2008 model was similar on the surface to the original, but was capable of flying into battle with two more HE-8 Venom missiles, the better to swat GI Joe out of the sky with!
2009 Variations
Just a year later, Cobra updated its CLAWs once more. The red model can carry two HE-8 Venom missiles and two Flashfire bombs, whether or not a pilot is operating the vehicle. Furthermore, CLAW pilots are assisted by the following, additional accessory:
Remote Sighting Camera: built from the chassis of old Trouble Bubble aerial mines, these cameras hover using small retro rocket engines, and feed video data of a target location to a CLAW pilot or central command with rank value 20 ability - from up to 100 miles away!
