Origin:
As is the case with almost every other GI Joe, Captain Grid-Iron lacks ascendant powers provided by mutant genes, a sorcerous education, or a psionic potential. However, he makes do with some high tech hardware, inspired motivation, and exceptional combat training.
Powers:
(none)
Hindrances / Augmentations:
(none)
Equipment:
Football Grenades (i): while most Joes carry pineapple or baseball grenades, Captain Grid-Iron instead hauls oversized, football shaped explosives into the field. They inflict intensity 12 fragmentary (physical) damage to everything within near missile range of where they detonate.
Football Helmet (s): an homage to Captain Grid-Iron's college days, this headgear is a reinforced football helmet. Equipped with a transparent visor to cover his eyes, this helmet provides the Captain intensity 8, or +2, protection from physical attacks that strike his head.
Rocket Launcher (i): this odd weapon is a hand-held, rifle-shaped implement with four rockets attached to the barrel. Each of these long range projectiles can inflict intensity 10 fragmentary damage to all uncovered targets within near missile distance of where they hit.
Sidearm (a): should things go wrong, and hand-to-hand combat simply prove insufficient, Captain Grid-Iron can either fire one round from this weapon to inflict his Agility +4 in damage, or a three-round burst to inflict his Agility +5 in damage.
Skills:
Boxing (s): as hand-to-hand combat is his primary military specialty, Captain Grid-Iron can defend himself when unarmed utilizing the 'sweet science'. He may divide his pre-card play action score between two unarmed melee attacks, the last of which occurs as a contingent action.
Guns (a): Captain Grid-Iron is well trained in the use of all conventional firearms. Whether he's using a standard, semi-automatic, or fully automatic rifle or pistol, or even a sawed-off shotgun, he may do so at one difficulty level lower than is normally necessary.
Leadership (w): his West Point training involved Captain Grid-Iron gaining significant leadership training. If he can pass an average intensity Willpower action at the beginning of the action, his leadership grants his team a +1 to all actions - which turns into a -1 penalty if it disappears.
Marksman (a): in addition to being competent with most conventional firearms, Captain Grid-Iron is skilled in the utilization of large-caliber and line-of-sight weaponry, like his curious rocket launcher. He may utilize such weapons at one difficulty level lower than is usually required.
Martial Arts (a): complementing his boxing talent, this skill allows Captain Grid-Iron to resolve unarmed melee attacks at a reduced difficulty. He may also lower the difficulty of actions to reduce falling damage and to catch objects or weapons thrown at his person.
Military / United States (w): the 'origin' for most of his skills, this talent describes Captain Grid-Iron's indoctrination into the Army way of life. Go Army! He knows military protocols and procedures in an instinctive manner, and has many additional perks and benefits as a result.
Sports / Football (a): you don't get to be West Point's quarterback without having some sort of natural skill. Captain Grid-Iron had such talent before entering the Point, but refined it within such that he may plan and execute football maneuvers at a reduced difficulty.
Wrestling (s): Captain Grid-Iron can wrestle with competence. An average Strength (strength) action allows him to place his foe in a hold, and every further exchange he can pass a like action, he may inflict the same damage to his opponent - until he lets go or is forced off.
Contacts:
As a member of GI Joe, Captain Grid-Iron can count that team as a reliable contact; the Joes have been through far too much to hang their fellows out to dry when the chips are down. He also has additional, as of yet undefined military contacts from his days in the West Point academy.
Calling:
Soldier, with a secondary calling of Protector: Captain Grid-Iron love the Army, but he didn't enlist just to make a career of it - he wanted to help people. That's why he turned down an appointment to the Army War College, and that's why he readily accepted membership in the GI Joe team!
Costume:
When in action on the GI Joe team, Captain Grid-Iron usually wears the same uniform.
It consists of a long-sleeved, green camouflage shirt beneath a dark green vest, light orange trousers, a gray leather belt, green and gray camouflage boots, green, fingerless gloves, orange elbow pads, and the dark green, visored football helmet noted above.
Personality:
Captain Grid-Iron tries too hard to be likable. He goes out of his way to be friendlier than necessary to his fellow Joes, probably to 'make up' for his West Point background, though they generally like him anyway. He's also got the bad habit of a non-stop John wayne impression.

Story:
Knowing his way around a football and being inclined to a life in the military, you can imagine how happy being appointed to West Point made Terrence Lydon. Being very good at what he does, the man easily made the West Point football team, quickly earning the quarterback position.
That's not all there is to Captain Grid-Iron, though. Despite his rigorous athletic schedule, which went above and beyond the usual training cadets at the Point undertake, Captain Grid-Iron graduated at the top of his class! With such credentials, the Captain had his choice of assignments.
As it turned out however, Captain Grid-Iron wanted to actually do something useful with all his military training, and turned down an appointment to the prestigious United States Army War College, instead taking a company-level infantry command post to 'be where the action is'.
This commitment to the military life, putting the needs of the Army above his own career, singled the Captain out for membership in an elite group sponsored jointly by the various armed forces: the GI Joe team. Naturally, he couldn't resist this opportunity to fight terrorism head-on.
Joining the team in 1990, Captain Grid-Iron proved himself as a hand-to-hand combat expert, and packs a variety of unconventional firepower in the field. From his customized football grenades to his bizarre rocket-launching rifle, the Captain is ready to dish out the pain.
Most of Captain Grid-Iron's missions with GI Joe were highly classified 'Special Missions,' however, details of which have not yet been revealed to the public. In fact, the only documented action the Captain saw with the Joe team was during one of Cobra's many attacks on the Pit III!
In time, the Joes were deemed unnecessary, and the powers that be decided that conventional military forces could handle Cobra from that point on. In other words, the GI Joe team suddenly had no need to exist, and as such, it was mothballed by the government - indefinitely.
(Historical Divergence)
Well, for three years anyway.
When the government realized that Cobra was still going strong, it reactivated the GI Joe team, albeit in a new configuration - with a few 'old guard' veterans leading a rather large company of new 'greenshirt' troops. Ultimately, Captain Grid-Iron wasn't chosen as a member of this team.
As are most GI Joes, though, he remains on call should he be needed, and is ready to spring into action against the forces of Cobra - or any other terrorist group - should he only be asked! And naturally, this happened when Cobra's shenanigans spiraled out of control, as they tend to do.
In instances such as the second Cobra Island Civil War, not to mention Cobra's instigation of World War III, Captain Grid-Iron was called in to help save the day, as were all of the other GI Joe 'reservists'. Furthermore, after the War, the team was not disbanded again.
No, the idea was to keep the GI Joe team fully staffed this time, to watch out for any further activity from lingering Cobra remnants, not to mention for the purposes of preventing another organization like them from rising up again.
