Origin:
Like a very large percentage of his fellow GI Joes, Sub-Zero is but a normal, if highly trained and motivated, human. Lacking a mysterious origin or ascendant powers of any variety, he fights evil with naught but a large array of standard issue weaponry and sheer bad attitude!
Known Powers:
(none)
Limitations / Enhancements:
(none)
Equipment:
Arctic Gear: when on the job, Sub-Zero always wears an insulated, fur-lined, hooded winter coat, face protection (goggles and/or a frost-free face mask), insulated boots (with crampons for ice gription), insulated trousers, thick winter gloves, and a pair of snowshoes.
Grenades: pinned onto his left shoulder for easy access, Sub-Zero always carries grenades while in the field. He can use these fragmentary devices to inflict Remarkable (30) Edged Attack damage to his target and any other uncovered foes within the area they explode inside.
Knife: handy since you never know when your other weapons will fail you, this blade serves as a useful tool and implement of pain for Sub-Zero. Made from Incredible (40) m.s. materials, Sub-Zero can use this blade to cut through items of like m.s., or to inflict Edged Attack damage in melee.
M-60 Machine Gun: his standard armament, Sub-Zero can fire a single round from this weapon to inflict Good (10) Shooting damage, a short burst of such to inflict Excellent (20) Shooting damage, or fire it continuously to inflict Remarkable (30) Shooting damage.
Mortar: when he's got to wreck something big, Sub-Zero can inflict considerable damage with this weapon at line-of-sight range. The shells that this weapon fires inflict Incredible (40) Edged Attack damage to all uncovered targets in the area in which they detonate.
Quirks:
Attitude: Sub-Zero's got a bad attitude all the time, more so when he's cold. Given that most of his time on the job is spent in polar climes, this means he's always a surly cuss, and must pass a Psyche FEAT roll at -2 CS if he wishes to 'play nice'.
Talents:
Guns: one of the primary components of his Army basic training, this talent describes Sub-Zero's ability to utilize most modern firearms. Whether he's wielding a standard, semi-automatic, or fully automatic rifle or pistol, Sub-Zero may do so as though his Agility was +1 CS in rank.
Marksman: the skill he requires to perform his secondary military specialty, this talent allows Sub-Zero to easily utilize 'line-of-sight' weaponry such as mortars, light anti-tank RPGs, and high-caliber cannons. When using such implements of destruction, Sub-Zero may do so at a +1 CS.
Martial Arts type B: another portion of Sub-Zero's Army basic training, this talent allows him to fight even while unarmed. Whenever he attempts any unarmed melee strike, whether it's a punch, kick, or even a head butt, Sub-Zero may do so at a +1 CS to his listed Fighting score.
Military / United States: originally a member of the United States Army, Sub-Zero gained this skill before all his other talents. His Army training has given Sub-Zero an inherent understanding of military policies and procedures, as well as the considerable benefit of rank.
Survival: helping him perform his primary military specialty, this talent describes Sub-Zero's ability to survive in most hostile climates. Whether he's in an arid desert, tropical jungle, or an arctic wasteland, he can scrounge up enough food, water and shelter to get by.
Contacts:
As a member of GI Joe, Sub-Zero can completely rely upon his teammates for assistance in a pinch; they tend to look out for each other after all. Furthermore, he has several additional, as of yet undefined (floating) military contacts in addition to the GI Joes.
Costume:
Sub-Zero's first GI Joe field uniform is comrpised of an insulated white jacket with light blue trim and buttons, insulated white trousers, waterproof white boots with light blue trim, a blue belt, blue straps and pouches for various gear, and black insulated gloves.
Personality:
Mark is a surly young officer. He hates the cold, which seems to bring out a single-minded rage in him that is simply unheard of in the western world. So why did he become a cold weather specialist, then? Well, that's the simple part - Sub-Zero just enjoys being mean all the time!
Real Name: Mark Habershaw, Grade O-2
Occupation: winter operations specialist, field artillery
Legal Status: citizen of the United States with no known criminal record
Marital Status: single
Alias(es), if any: none
Group Affiliation: GI Joe
Height: 5' 10"
Hair: unrevealed (likely brown)
Eyes: brown
Weight: 175 lbs.
Other Distinguishing Characteristics: Sub-Zero looks angry. Constantly.
Story:
Sub-Zero is a mean guy, which is basically the whole impetus for his life. He likes being mean, and he is consistently seeking out opportunities to inflict his meanness on other people. As it turns out, there aren't too many job openings like this for someone outside of pro wrestling.
Enter the Army.
Having seen numerous drill sergeants dressing down recruits in film, Sub-Zero assumed this would be a good place to vent his inner rage. Of course, this involved being on the receiving end of a whole lot of attitude for awhile, which only served to make Sub-Zero angrier.
But that's okay, because Sub-Zero likes being angry. This is also why, after getting his officer's commission, he became a cold weather specialist. He hates the cold, you see, and being exposed to bitter polar winds only serves to produce an untold level of rage within Sub-Zero.
Rage the likes of which the world has rarely known. Furious to a fault, Sub-Zero has motivated himself to become an expert in cold weather operations. This allows him the feeling of a job well done, in addition to the bizarre endorphin rush he gets from being constantly angry.
Though unpleasant to be around, Sub-Zero went on to teach at the Army Northern Warfare Training center in Fort Greeley, Alaska, working as a consultant to the Cold Regions Test Center there. He was also a part of 'Operation Chill' in Europe, training troops there in cold weather tactics.
Good at what he does, this got Sub-Zero noticed by the powers that be, who ultimately recommended him to the GI Joe team. Though the Joes already had a handful of cold weather combat specialists at this point, it seems that Cobra is always up to something at one of the two poles.
Getting through their entrance exam via sheer rage, Sub-Zero joined GI Joe in 1990. He was a member of that group for four years, during which time he served in the small but effective Arctic Commandos team. Mind you, most of Sub-Zero's GI Joe missions were highly classified affairs.
The details of these Special Missions have yet to be revealed to the general public, much less most of his fellow Joes. However, Sub-Zero served with distinction despite his inherently crappy attitude up until the Joes were disbanded in 1994.
(Historical Divergence)
It is unknown what Sub-Zero did with himself after the Joes were shut down.
It's possible that he retired to a small cabin in the Arctic Circle so he could be angry all the time - if all by himself. It's possible that he returned to Fort Greeley to resume tormenting the next generation of the Army's cold weather operatives. Makes you feel sorry for them!
However, with GI Joe re-forming in the midst of another surge in Cobra activity, Sub-Zero has been more than ready to lend his assistance to the team when it puts out an open call for 'everyone' to help out, as it did during the second Cobra Island Civil War and World War III.
1993 Variations
Costume:
Mark's second GI Joe field uniform is similar to his first. It consists of a dark blue insulated jacket with white trim, dark blue insulated trousers, dark blue waterproof boots with white trim, a white belt, white straps and pouches for various gear, and white insulated gloves.
