Origin:

Like the vast majority of his fellows on the GI Joe team, Whiteout is naught but a normal human, if a particularly athletic one. He lacks sorcerous talents, mutant powers and unusually high tech gizmos, but he's definitely one tough hombre, especially since he does his job in the deepest, darkest reaches of both the Arctic and Antarctic ice caps - and most of the Joes don't envy him his job one bit.

Known Powers:

(none)

Equipment:

Cold Weather Outfit: as an Arctic specialist, Whiteout has to wear a special uniform while he's out on missions. This suit consists of heavily padded, triple layered (at least) boots, gloves, trousers, and a hooded jacket, a suit that effectively provides him rank value 20 protection from cold attacks, covering his entire body (including a visor to keep his face from being terminally exposed).

Colt M1911A1 Pistol: a backup for his advanced laser pistol, this trusty standby can be used in a pinch to cover Whiteout in his snow-bound escapades. This weapon can either discharge one round to inflict rank value 6 Piercing damage, or a short burst of such to inflict rank value 10 Piercing damage. The .45's magazine holds eight rounds, so if he fires conservatively, Whiteout can get in quite a few good shots if necessary.

Laser Rifle: the GI Joe team's standby directed energy weapon, this rifle was first tested out by Snow Job almost two decades ago, but is still years ahead of other such military weapons. This rifle can be fired to inflict rank value 10 Armor Piercing Energy damage per blast, and can fire ten shots before its energy pack needs to be swapped out - which takes a full turn to accomplish.

Skis: a must for a soldier in the Arctic without a motorized vehicle to call his own, this pair of skis (and ski-poles) can be used by Whiteout to cross country with remarkable speed. On relatively level ground, he can use his skis to move consistently (as if walking) at up to rank value 4 ground speed - 27.27 MPH - though if he's moving downhill, he can achieve spectacularly higher velocities (and safely, too)!

Quirks:

(none)

Skills:

Advanced Guns: in addition to his skill with regular guns, Whiteout has been properly trained in the use of advanced, energy-emitting weaponry. Fully qualified and proficient in the use of such military hardware, he can make attacks with laser guns and the like as though his Coordination trait was +1 RS higher than is listed above. Furthermore, he can do so while skiing!

Guns: an essential portion of his military education, Whiteout has been well trained in the proper use of firearms. Whether he's using a standard, semi-automatic, or fully automatic rifle or pistol, he can do so as though his Coordination trait was +1 RS in value. Whiteout's so good, in fact, that he can often fire a gun effectively while he's on skis, blasting away at a foe while skiing downhill!

Martial Arts style B: another important portion of Whiteout's Army education, this skill allows him to effectively defend himself should he find himself totally unarmed. In such combat, Whiteout may make any punch, kick, head butt, elbow or knee smash, or any other physical assault as though his Melee value was +1 RS higher than is listed above.

Military: Whiteout wasn't originally a militarily minded man, in that he was recruited instead of simply enlisting. However, he has received the same martial training that the other Joes have had, and as such, he's got an almost instinctual understanding of military protocols. Furthermore, this skill provides Whiteout various military contacts, which he can use above and beyond those in the Joe team.

Sports / Skiing: though it sort of goes without saying, Whiteout excels in the use of these snowy implements, whether he uses them on snow or ice - though he prefers snow, of course. When attempting ski-based maneuvers, Whiteout may do so as if his Coordination was +1 RS in value. This comes in real handy when he's moving about at extremely high speed on these things.

Survival: a natural skier and competent Arctic trooper, Whiteout has been well educated in the fine arts of survival in the most cold and remote of terrestrial regions. Should he find himself left destitute in such a realm, Whiteout can easily scrounge up enough food, water, and shelter to get by until either support arrives or he can make his way to relative safety.

Contacts:

As a member of the GI Joe team, Whiteout can easily call upon his allies for aid in a pinch should he need to; after all, the Joes have been through too much together to leave one another hanging. In addition to the Joe team, though, Whiteout also has additional contacts in both military, political, and journalistic circles, even if these specific contacts have yet to be identified.

Costume:

Whiteout's arctic uniform is similar to Snow Job's, actually, in that it consists of a thickly padded white jacket (with a 'dirty' camouflage pattern on it), white trousers (also with a 'dirty' camouflage pattern on it), white gloves, black leather boots, a light brown leather belt, a white holster for his pistol, and a large black visor that keeps the polar chill out of his eyes while at work.

Personality:

Leonard truly loves the snow, in that he'd never even seen the stuff until he was in the midst of an early mid-life crisis, and was hooked ever since he encountered his first downfall. He likes nothing better than to go skiing, whether he's doing it for fun or for a living, and finds it much more satisfying than his last job. Of course, he still retains the opinionated nature that previously drove him to publishing.

Real Name: Leonard J. Lee III, Grade E-6, (Sergeant)
Occupation: Arctic ski trooper
Legal Status: American citizen with no known criminal record
Marital Status: single
Alias(es), if any: none
Group Affiliation: GI Joe

Height: 5' 11"
Hair: brown

Weight: 165 lbs
Other Distinguishing Characteristics: Whiteout wears a thick, brown beard and moustache at all times.

Story:

Whiteout grew up in the Arizona desert after his parents, tired of ridiculously cold northeastern winters, moved there to find much warmer housing. As such, he never knew snow as a child, and simply thought of it as something that happened to other people. That's why, when he first encountered the stuff, he was instantly hooked, and had to play in it non-stop.

Of course, Whiteout wouldn't have even been caught in a snow storm if it wasn't for the abject failure of his political magazine, Life Free Or Else!, which he launched after graduating college. You see, he started publishing with the money he'd gained after selling his considerable baseball card collection, but his Libertarian publication wasn't received well by the public.

In fact, it was hated so much that Whiteout had to skip town to cover his hide, and when he did, he went east to find both cooler climes and a new career altogether. When he got there, he was caught in a snowstorm that forced him to deal with the new (to him) form of precipitation, and he decided that he loved it. Within days, he'd donned his first pair of skis, and that was it.

Whiteout spent an indeterminate amount of time mastering the snowbound implements, and by the time he was done, he could perform virtually any ski-bound maneuver he wished. He slowly adopted a more chill lifestyle, and even grew out his beard so he could be insulated from the wind-chill caused by high speed downhill slides. The trick was making money, though, for skiing isn't a job in and of itself.

This job came in the form of the GI Joe team, though, who recruited Whiteout after he saved no less than twelve trapped mountain climbers with his well-developed skills one day. Accepting their offer, he then underwent intense military training to pick up the other skills he'd need as an Arctic trooper for the Joe team, and when he was ready, Whiteout joined the Joes full time.

While he's still green in the combat department, it's no lie that the man is a demon on skis, and can even shoot down aircraft while skiing downhill. As such, it's likely that the man will evolve into a fine GI Joe operative, not only because of his own skills, of course, but because he's got a large body of Arctic troopers to learn the job from. Time will tell, of course!

2010 Variations

Equipment:

the Wolf Hound: though he's quite spry on his skis, Whiteout has been given a much more durable conveyance of late. The most recent addition to his already considerable arsenal is the Wolf Hound. This vehicle, originally known as the Snow Cat, is a mainstay of the GI Joe Arctic arsenal, has been updated with even more advanced electronics and weaponry, and is described in its own vehicular entry.

Costume:

Whiteout's second GI Joe outfit, like his first, is similar to one of Snow Job's. His newest field uniform includes a hooded, thickly padded white jacket with a black camouflage pattern printed on, white padded trousers with a plethora of utility pockets, gray leather gloves, gray leather boots, a gray leather belt, gray webbing to hold his gear, and gray goggles to protect his eyes from Snow Blindness.
