Origin:

Checkpoint, a member of the GI Joe's team's reserve, Steel Brigade unit, lacks exceptional powers. Though he excels in his field and possesses multiple useful skills, this member of the Steel Brigade is but a normal human, no matter how much he may seem larger than life.

Powers:

(none)

Hindrances / Augmentations:

(none)

Equipment:

Grenades (i): Steel Brigadiers usually go into combat with at least one grenade handy. They can fling these explosive devices to inflict intensity 10 damage to all targets within near missile range of their detonation point that are not currently under cover.

Helmet (s): almost all members of the Steel Brigade wear a particularly distinctive chrome helmet, which include a mirrored visor (for intensity 8 Screened Senses / Sight). This headgear offers Steel Brigade troopers like, or +2, protection against physical attacks striking their heads.

Knife (s): a vital tool for any armed representative of the government, Checkpoint carries one of these at all times. Made from m.s. 13 materials, this blade can be used to cut through items of up to like m.s. (with time), or to inflict his Strength +2 damage in melee.

Missile Launcher (i): Checkpoint can inflict a staggering amount of damage with this powerful launcher. Equipped with a shield to protect him from rocket exhaust, this device launches missiles that inflict intensity 10 damage to all within near missile range of their detonation point.

Tonfa Stick (s): mainly a defensive weapon, Checkpoint makes use of this weapon more than his missile launcher (by far!) in the execution of his duties. He can use it as if his Strength was +2, either when attacking a target or when blocking their incoming attacks.

Skills:

Boxing (s): Checkpoint is well-versed in urban combat, and can easily fight the forces of darkness without a weapon when necessary. He may divide his pre-card play action score between two unarmed attacks, the last of which he may attempt as a contingent action.

Law Enforcement (w): like his fellow Steel Brigadier, Red Zone, Checkpoint is well-versed in law enforcement techniques. He got his training as an MP, however, which gives him an understanding of both local and military law and how it applies to everyone.

Guns (a): as a member of GI Joe's Steel Brigade, Checkpoint has learned how to use guns quite well. Whether he's handling a standard, semi-automatic, or fully automatic rifle or pistol, Checkpoint may do so at one difficulty level lower than is normally necessary.

Military / United States (w): the source of all his talents, Checkpoint has this skill as a general matter of course. As you may have guessed, he has a reflexive understanding of the SOP, and can seamlessly blend into, and function within, a military group of men and women.

Skill / Clubs (s): assisting him in his security duties, Checkpoint has learned how to effectively use the tonfa in melee, either for offensive or defensive purposes. Whenever attacking or attempting a special maneuver with his tonfa stick, Checkpoint does so at a reduced difficulty.

Wrestling (s): Checkpoint is an accomplished wrestler. If he passes a Strength (strength) action against his foe on a given exchange, he can inflict the same damage upon said foe on each additional exchange during which he can pass this action (representing a hold).

Contacts:

Checkpoint has contacts in the form of his fellow Steel Brigade operatives, and as a result the GI Joe team as a whole. He can rely upon almost all of them for aid in a pinch - except for perhaps Major Barrage, who has a sort of hate-hate relationship with Checkpoint.

Calling:

Soldier: Checkpoint is a military man, through and through. He enjoys his work in the Army, as he likes to make a difference in the world - even if he rarely gets put into action with the GI Joe team. He'll happily do what he's told to protect his country.

Costume:

Checkpoint's uniform is a variation on the standard Steel Brigade suit. It includes a grass green vest under a blue T-shirt, tan trousers, black leather boots, a black wrist watch, green knee pads, a black leather belt, a green (left) shoulder pad, and a chrome and green helmet with a black visor.

Personality:

Jared is not the strong and silent type. He seems more than ready to throw himself into any challenge, and also apparently has something of a temper. He's on particularly bad terms with Major Barrage, the two brawling more often than not - which may be why he's just a Joe reservist.

Real Name: Jared Wade, Grade E-4
Occupation: military policeman, carpenter
Legal Status: citizen of the United States with no known criminal record
Marital Status: single
Alias(es), if any: none
Group Affiliation: GI Joe, the Steel Brigade (GI Joe reserve unit)

Height: 6' 5"
Hair: light brown
Eyes: brown
Weight: 255 lbs
Other Distinguishing Characteristics: Jared usually walks around with a squint. As though he were deep in thought, under the direct sun, or perhaps taking after Brock.

Story:

Jared was a wrestler in college, and was going places. Terminally competitive, he developed a rival at another school, one David Vennemeyer. The two always had titanic contests on the mat, and Jared is the only person known to pin the 6' 8" Vennemeyer in a match.

At first Vennemeyer had grudging respect for Jared, but this turned to resentment when during a match, the man blew out his knee - thus preventing him from participating in the Olympic tryouts. Jared felt bad but didn't think too much of it; stuff happens, after all.

Jared eventually joined the military, and became an MP in due time. His sheer physical strength and dedication to his duty got him noticed by the military powers that be, and he was nominated for a position on the elite GI Joe team. Jared was, of course, elated.

He went through the Joe team's grueling exam and attained all the security clearances needed, and was placed on their reserve, Steel Brigade team. As Checkpoint, he provides security for GI Joe teams whey they're active near his home town of Springboro, Ohio (or Dayton).

You can imagine Jared's dismay when, on one mission with the Joes, he learned that Vennemeyer was also a Joe: the one and only Major Barrage. The two instantly got into a tussle, wrecking up the place in the process. Since he's a carpenter, Jared was tasked with the cleanup.

Though he does his duty, and does it well, Jared nonetheless seems to be easily drawn into physical confrontations with Major Barrage - which may be why he was kept in the Steel Brigade, and not brought on as a full-time Joe. It's hard to say, really.
