Origin:

Like almost all of his fellow Joes, Torpedo is naught but a normal human, lacking mutant powers, sorcerous training, or psionic schooling, among other esoteric things. What he does have, however, is a penchant for exceptionally clean living, not to mention a single-minded sense of discipline bordering on the obsessive - which helps him to seemingly achieve the impossible regularly!

Known Powers:

(none)

Limitations / Enhancements:

(none)

Equipment:

Diving Gear: Torpedo carries various items which allow him to function almost normally while underwater. His wet suit, combined with his air tank, underwater mask, and flippers, allows him to act underwater for about four hours, and move at one water speed category higher than he otherwise should be capable of beneath the waves.

Filipino Butterfly Knife: having learned how to use this bladed weapon before he even joined the Navy, Torpedo carries one with him constantly, whether he's on a mission or not. He can use this blade, of Incredible (40) m.s., to either cut through items of like m.s. or to inflict Typical (6) Edged Attack damage with each deadly strike.

Harpoon Gun: though he's carried various weapons of this type through the years, all of them basically perform the same job. To wit, each fire a harpoon capable of inflicting Good (10) Shooting damage per deadly barb, and Torpedo's accuracy with this weapon is downright uncanny. It's a rare day that he doesn't skewer a foe after firing a harpoon at them!

Sidearm: whenever his harpoon gun (or any other hardware) fails him while operating on the surface, Torpedo usually carries a backup ranged weapon in the form of this firearm. He can fire this weapon to inflict Typical (6) Shooting damage with a single shot, or Good (10) Shooting damage in a semi-automatic, magazine-exhausting hail of lead.

Underwater Explosives: carried in various forms throughout his career, these devices are especially crafted to detonate underwater - to spectacular effect. In essence, they explode to inflict Incredible (40) Edged Attack damage, which will typically affect everyone within their detonation area, unless they're somehow covered from the blast.

Quirks:

(none)

Talents:

Demolitions: his claim to fame, Torpedo is a notoriously good saboteur. Given enough time and equipment, there are few things that Torpedo cannot destroy. Even when matters are more urgent, Torpedo can still add a +1 CS to any FEAT roll required when attempting to locate the ideal place with which to install explosives to demolish or otherwise disable a vehicle or structure.

Guns: an essential part of Torpedo's military education involved learning how to effectively utilize firearms. Whether it be a standard, semi-automatic, or fully automatic rifle or pistol, Torpedo can fire it as though his Agility score was +1 CS higher than is described above - even if he usually leans on his harpoon gun in ranged combat.

Martial Arts types A, B, C, and E: Torpedo mastered several different martial arts styles before he even turned nineteen. They let him Slam or Stun a foe regardless of their comparative Strength or Endurance scores, provide him a +1 initiative modifier in unarmed combat, and allow him a +1 CS when attempting strike, grapple, escape, or dodge maneuvers against a foe.

Military / United States: when he hooked up with the Navy, Torpedo was given the standard treatment during his basic training, not to mention during his extensive SEAL education. As such, he knows military protocols, as well as the laws of the sea, like the back of his hands. Furthermore, he has gained innumerable Military contacts during his time in the Navy.

Repair / Tinkering: while he's not a mechanic, per se, Torpedo likes to tinker with vehicles - especially his vintage '68 muscle car. Thanks to this and his 'hobby' of reading technical manuals, he can be considered to have this talent, allowing him a +1 CS to repair or modify existing items. He has no bonus towards building something from scratch, however.

Skill / Harpoon Guns: since his vocation tends to limit his use of standard firearms, Torpedo has acquired the skills necessary to utilize a harpoon gun - either on the surface or underwater. Torpedo can fire harpoon guns, which have become his weapon of choice, as though his Agility score was +1 CS higher than is listed above.

Skill / Knives: before he even hooked up with the Navy, Torpedo had acquired the ability to use a Filipino Butterfly knife, though his military schooling has extended his talent to all short blades. Torpedo can wield any of these implements as though his Fighting score was +1 CS higher than is listed above, which comes in handy when he needs to dispatch an enemy quietly.

Underwater Combat: an essential part of Torpedo's SEAL training, this talent represents his ability to fight effectively under the waves. Whenever he fights while submerged, whether he's engaging in melee or ranged combat, Torpedo may do so without suffering the usual penalty that all surface dwellers face when attempting actions in the water.

Contacts:

As a member of the GI Joe team, Torpedo can easily rely upon his fellows for aid should it become necessary. Of course, he can also utilize a rather long list of contacts in Navy circles as well, and he's on a first name basis with most SEALs trained between '94 and '97. Sure, Torpedo isn't the most likable Joe, but he always does his job in the field, and that's what matters.

Costume:

Torpedo's first uniform - at least while on missions - consisted of a wet suit. This skin-tight suit, designed to help him move through the water quickly, is a primarily black affair, though it has a large gray block in the center, one that moves down from his shoulders to the insides of his legs, down to his gray boots. He complements this suit with a gray pair of gloves and a gray belt.

Personality:

Torpedo is something of a cold fish, and doesn't have all that many friends; sure, the Joes respect him, but they're not all that familiar with him. He possesses a singular focus on whatever he's doing at the time, is highly disciplined, and is one of the best in his field of choice. He's also a strict vegetarian, and tends to grow his own food - he knows exactly what he's eating that way.

Real Name: Edward Leialoha, Grade W-4 (W-5 for a time)
Occupation: Navy SEAL
Legal Status: American citizen with no known criminal record
Marital Status: single
Alias(es), if any: Chief Torpedo
Group Affiliation: GI Joe

Height: 5' 10"
Hair: black
Eyes: brown
Weight: 155 lbs
Other Distinguishing Characteristics: none

Story:

Prior to enlisting in the Navy, Edward was a diving instructor, having always enjoyed exploring the world under the waves. He also mastered three different martial arts (Wu-Shu, Kenpo, and Go-Ju-Ryu), possessing a black belt in each style. Naturally, this made him more than qualified to enter the Navy SEAL school, and the man walked through said training with relative ease.

His exemplary performance as an underwater saboteur made him the Navy's choice as its first representative on the GI Joe team, and their choice was a good one. From the day he joined up with the team, Edward - under the code name of Torpedo - has served with distinction, punishing Cobra's aquatic forces time and time again when he encountered them on water-borne missions.

Over time, the GI Joe team acquired more and more Navy personnel, such as fellow SEAL Wet-Suit, deep sea diver Deep Six, and crackpot sailor Shipwreck, and Torpedo managed to work with them to further his effectiveness in various missions against Cobra. Several of these missions were early operations in or around Cobra Island, both during its creation and afterward.

Standing out over all else, however, was a double blind that he pulled, along with the other Joes listed above, to fool both Cobra and the Oktober Guard into fighting each other while the Joes recovered a Soviet Captain who wanted to defect to the United States. Along with Cutter, Torpedo and his fellow Navy folk managed the rescue of the man, with Cobra and the Guard realizing that they were duped all too late.

Most of Torpedo's missions were of this sneaky, underhanded type, and as such a majority of them are highly classified. However, it is known that he served as the Joe's original and most effective SEAL until the team was disbanded in '94. When this happened, Torpedo began to teach Under Water Demolitions school for the Navy, and made it the Navy class to attend.

When the Joe team was subsequently reactivated three years later, Torpedo immediately returned to the fold, at first solo, and later joined by both Wet-Suit and Shipwreck - the latter of which had since become a SEAL himself. The three of them comprised an aquatic demolitions team that was one of the most effective the world had ever seen, and they continually put Cobra's plans to rest prematurely.

(Historical Divergence)

Torpedo continues on as a member of the Joe team to this very day, occasionally working alone but most often working with his fellow Joes to stop Cobra's hijinks from getting completely out of control, as they did during the second Cobra Island Civil War, not to mention for the duration of World War III, Cobra's final gambit to conquer the world. Thanks to Torpedo and his fellows, however, this failed to occur!

1997 Variations

Costume:

After rejoining the Joe team in '97, Torpedo adopted a modified version of his original suit, one that was a lot more stealth oriented. This second suit is totally black, save for two red racing stripes that run down the seams where the black and gray elements of the wetsuit met before. Torpedo also changed the boots, gloves, and belt to a dull black as well, making him almost invisible in dark conditions underwater.

1998 Variations

Costume:

In 1998, Torpedo began to utilize a totally different suit, though this one, too, is primarily black in color. Instead of red or gray elements, however, this third wetsuit had navy blue and sea green straps in various placed to hold equipment. The suit also had a sea green belt, black boots, and gray gloves, which matched up with Shipwreck and Wet-Suit's uniforms at the time.

2003 Variations

Equipment:

Submachine Gun: when his harpoon gun simply isn't practical in a given situation, Torpedo utilizes a submachine gun to perforate his enemies! He may fire a single shot from this deadly weapon to inflict Typical (6) Shooting damage, a short burst of ammunition to inflict Good (10) Shooting damage, or a fully automatic spread to inflict Excellent (20) Shooting damage.

Costume:

Torpedo's fourth uniform is what he typically wears while not, in fact, in his diving suit. This outfit includes black and brown leather boots, green trousers, a brown leather belt, a green jacket over a dark green T-shirt, black leather gloves, various brown straps to hold a large variety of gear on both his upper arms and his left thigh, a black cap, and (occasionally) a silver rebreather.

2004 Variations

Equipment:

Rapid Runner (v1): when the GI Joe team was experimenting with its field-reconfigurable BTR devices, Torpedo made use of one such vehicle. His was the Rapid Runner, which could be assembled into one of two different configurations as needed: a hover-glider or a sea skimmer. This modular device is described more fully in its own vehicular entry.

Submachine Gun (v2): if his harpoon gun simply isn't practical in a given situation, Torpedo utilizes a submachine gun to perforate his enemies! He may fire a single shot from this deadly weapon to inflict Typical (6) Shooting damage, a short burst of ammunition to inflict Good (10) Shooting damage, or a fully automatic spread to inflict Excellent (20) Shooting damage.

VAMP Mark 5 (v2): while Torpedo loves his Rapid Runner, it's not really practical when working on solid ground. Thus, he also has a VAMP that he operates, alongside Big Brawler and Pathfinder, when his assignments see him working away from the water. As is the case with every version of the VAMP, you can find more details about it in its own vehicular description.

Costume:

When he's riding his Rapid Runner hover-glider, Torpedo wears a variant of his fourth suit. It consists of black leather boots, black trousers, a brown leather belt, a black jacket with a GI Joe logo over a black T-shirt, black leather gloves, various black and brown straps to hold his gear both on his left thigh and his upper arms, and a grass green cap.

Torpedo's sixth uniform is one he wears most often when driving the VAMP around with several of his fellow Joes. It includes a gray vest worn over a gray T-shirt, gray and brown camouflage-patterned pants, black leather gloves, black and brown leather boots, brown knife sheathes and firearm holsters, overlapping black leather belts on his pants, and black webbing for additional gear.

2008 Variations

Costume:

Torpedo's seventh uniform is another diving suit, but different in color than before. It is a skin-tight affair of course, designed to help him move through the water fast. It is mainly orange, with a black stripe running down the center of his chest and interior of his legs. It also includes black gloves and boots, orange flippers, and various implements to hold gear and strap his diving equipment on.

2015 Variations
