Origin:
Like the vast majority of the GI Joe team, Ambush is a completely normal human, lacking ascendant powers of any stripe. He was never bitten by a radioactive animal, doesn't possess beneficial mutations that would attract giant robots, and he definitely has no occult background.
Powers:
(none)
Hindrances / Augmentations:
(none)
Equipment:
Grenades (i): Ambush carries a bevy of grenades with him while on the job. His miniature arsenal includes fragmentary grenades (to inflict physical damage), tear gas grenades (to stun opponents), and smoke grenades (to provide obfuscation), all working at intensity 10.
Helmet (s): Ambush usually wears one of these in the field. This armor plated headgear helps to keep the man alive, whether he's stalking Cobras or wild beasts. Ambush's helmet provides him intensity 8, or +2, protection against cranial attacks.
Knife (s): since he often needs to cut things in the field, Ambush carries a knife on him at all times - sometimes, more than one (just depends on how hostile his environs are). These blades are of m.s. 12, can cut through items of like m.s., and let Ambush inflict +2 damage in melee.
Machine Gun (a): this two-handed weapon can be used to lethal effect against anything. It can discharge one round to inflict his Agility +4 in damage, a short burst of such to inflict his Agility +5 in damage, or be fired continuously to inflict his Agility +6 in damage.
This weapon has a 'scope mounted on top, allowing Ambush a +1 to hit in ambush (heheh) situations.
Sidearm (a): a handy backup should his other weaponry fail, Ambush usually has this firearm holstered and ready. In combat, he can fire a single round from this weapon to inflict his Agility +4 in damage, or a short burst of such to inflict his Agility +5 in damage.
Tent (s): useful for sleeping in the field without being eaten alive by bugs (or much larger animals), this small tent is also used by Ambush for camouflage. The material and poles used to construct it are of earthy colors, and allow his sleeping form to blend into most any environment.
Skills:
Boxing (s): one talent that Ambush acquired in Army basic, this skill represents his ability to defend himself unarmed, should he need to. In unarmed melee, Ambush may divide his pre-card play action score between two attacks, the last of which will occur as a contingent action.
Guns (a): another talent gained in Army basic, this skill describes Ambush's ability to fire most conventional firearms. Whether it be a standard, semi-automatic, or fully automatic rifle or pistol, Ambush may wield firearms at one difficulty level lower than is usually necessary.
Military / United States (w): the ultimate source of all his non-sneaky talents, this skill acts as a handy 'background' element for Ambush. It describes his instinctual understanding of military protocols and procedures, and offers him several additional military contacts.
Stealth (w): Ambush has always been sneaky - ever since he was a wee youth. He has the ability to render himself completely silent, and knows how to camouflage his body so he cannot be easily seen. If he can win in a Willpower (willpower) contest against a body, they cannot find him.
Contacts:
As a member of the elite GI Joe team, Ambush is recognized as one of the best of the best in his line of work. As such, when he requires assistance on a mission, his fellow Joes are more than happy to lend it, for such aid is never requested lightly.
Calling:
Soldier: while he's kind of a loner, and may possibly exhibit Peace of Mind tendencies, Ambush is a soldier more than anything else, having enlisted to do his national duty. He truly enjoys his work, however, and has no problem undertaking just about any mission for the Joes.
Costume:
Ambush's first GI Joe field uniform consists of a khakis and brown camouflaged, short sleeved shirt over a brown long-sleeved shirt, khakis and brown camouflaged trousers, black leather boots, a green leather belt, a green grenade bandolier, and various holsters, sheathes, and pouches.
Personality:
Ambush is evasive by his very nature, tending to keep to himself. He's also rather tenacious, and will do just about anything to get what he wants. This makes for a rather unpredictable individual, and he tends to surprise people at times when pulling some stunt or another on the job.
Real Name: Aaron McMahon, grade E-3
Occupation: camouflage specialist
Legal Status: citizen of the United States with no known criminal record
Marital Status: single
Alias(es), if any: none
Group Affiliation: GI Joe
Height: 5' 11"
Hair: light brown
Eyes: blue
Weight: 180 lbs
Other Distinguishing Characteristics: Aaron wears a rather large moustache, one that is connected to his equally large side burns by a beard that does not, in fact, cover his chin.
Story:
Ambush is the kind of guy that slips through the cracks. It's not that he's intentionally sneaky so much as he's just one of those quiet, evasive types that aren't all that sociable. He's also good at concealing himself, and when he decides to do so, you can almost never find him.
For instance, when he was ten years old, Ambush vanished for three weeks, only being found after the National Guard finally rooted out his super secret hiding place under his parents' front porch. When he enlisted in the Army, he naturally became a concealment specialist.
His natural skills, honed by Army training, have made the man one of the hardest people to find when he wishes to disappear. He can use common items to disguise himself easily, and when he's got actual camo paint and covert materials at hand, the man can vanish without a trace.
While being closer than you would imagine!
His amazing skill in this area got him noticed by his superiors, who eventually recommended him to the GI Joe team; they didn't mind losing him since they could never find him anyway. Ambush quickly found that he enjoyed working with this group of elite fighting men and women.
Ambush is so good at what he does, in fact, that he was paired up with Low-Light when the GI Joe team found it necessary to clean up some bizarre experiments on Cobra Island that resulted in dinosaurs (!) roaming about. His and Low-Light's skills were natural complements, after all.
While he truly loved his job, Ambush couldn't keep it forever, for the GI Joe team was eventually disbanded when the government decided that Cobra could be handled by conventional military forces.
(Historical Divergence)
When this turned out to be a critical mistake, the GI Joe team was reactivated.
Ambush stuck around for as long as the second incarnation of the Joes required his assistance, and remained 'on call' during its third. He was eventually pulled into action again when Cobra instigated World War III, though thanks to Ambush and his fellow Joes, Cobra was defeated.
For real this time. With Cobra Commander out of the picture, the Joes simply had to mop up that villain's minions whilst holding the world together while it undid the damage caused by Cobra's last, best bid for world domination. Ambush naturally hung around to finish the job!
1993 Variations
Equipment:
'Dino Stun' Tranquilizer Gun (s): when hunting dinosaurs (!), Ambush carries a modified tranquilizer gun. This gun carries an intensity 16 tranquilizing payload that can knock out even the largest of dinosaurs, doing so with an easy difficulty action, opposed by the target's Strength.
Laser Pistol (a): while most of his gear is low-tech, Ambush nonetheless wields a handy product of GI Joe science, a hand-held laser projector. This weapon inflicts Ambush's Agility +5 Armor Piercing energy damage per blast, and can fire up to ten blasts before it must be recharged.
Skills:
Advanced Guns (a): after joining GI Joe, Ambush discovered a whole new arsenal of high tech weaponry. Liking this a lot, he co-opted and mastered the use of advanced, energy-emitting weapons like his laser pistol, which he may use at a reduced difficulty.
Costume:
Ambush's second GI Joe uniform is like his first. It consists of khaki trousers, a black, long-sleeved shirt under a collared, short-sleeved green shirt, black leather boots, an orange bandolier, an orange leather belt, orange belt laces, and various holsters, sheathes, and pouches.
