Origin:
Like the majority of his fellow GI Joe operatives, Charbroil lacks super-human powers of any variety. He simply has his guts, his talents, and his government issue flame weaponry with which to fight the forces of Cobra and other terrorists.
Known Powers:
(none)
Limitations / Enhancements:
(none)
Equipment:
Asbestos Suit: a vital necessity when working as a flamethrower, Charbroil always wears this in the field. This full-body suit, complete with handy respirators for emergencies, offers Charbroil Amazing (50) resistance to fire, and Remarkable (30) resistance to heat.
Flamethrower: his primary weapon in the field, Charbroil can readily bring fiery doom down upon enemy forces. He can inflict Incredible (40) SD Energy damage upon a single target, reduced -1 CS if he coats an entire group (or a full area) with the flaming jelly it emits.
Helmet: technically a part of his asbestos suit, Charbroil's helmet offers him additional benefits. It provides him Good (10) resistance to physical attacks on his head (in addition to his suit's fire/heat protection), as well as air filters of Remarkable (30) potency.
Sidearm: should his flamethrower fail him, Charbroil at least has the benefit of this backup piece. He can discharge a single round from this weapon to inflict Typical (6) Shooting damage, or a three-round burst to inflict Good (10) Shooting damage.
Quirks:
(none)
Talents:
Guns: though he doesn't primarily use them while on the job, Charbroil has been trained in the fine art of gunplay - you never know when your flamethrower will be 'too much', really. He can fire most modern firearms (regardless of type) at his Agility score +1 CS.
Martial Arts type B: Charbroil has been educated in various self-defense techniques as a member of the Army - because he can't always burn his foes to a crisp. Whenever punching, kicking, or even elbow smashing a foe, Charbroil may do so at his Fighting score +1 CS.
Military / United States: the source of all his marketable skills, this talent serves as an origin of sorts for Charbroil. It showcases his ability to fight effectively in a group, as well as his inherent understanding of the Standard Operating Procedure.
Skill / Flamethrower: his favorite skill to use on the job, this talent describes Charbroil's ability to effectively use flame weaponry. Whether its the venerable M-7 or his own, custom-built device, Charbroil may use such weaponry at his Agility score +1 CS.
Contacts:
Charbroil is a member of the GI Joe team, and as such can rely upon them for assistance should he but ask; the team has fought long and hard together against Cobra. Charbroil has further, additional military contacts, most often in his own, flame throwing specialty.
Costume:
Charbroil's first GI Joe field uniform is his asbestos suit. It is mainly reddish-orange in color, and covers him from head to toe. It is accented by orange stripes down the legs, orange shoulder pads, chromed knee pads and wrist guards, a chromed chest plate, and a chromed helmet.
Personality:
Charbroil is a rather nice fellow overall, but people tend to give him a pretty wide berth. This is because he has the habit of 'playing' with fire more often than not, but this is only because he's been wielding it as a tool ever since he was a wee youth.

Story:
Carl got the nickname of Charbroil as a youth, mostly because was always in the vicinity of fire and heat. Whether he was torching the water pipes in the winter to keep them from freezing or shoveling coal into industrial blast furnaces on the job, Charbroil was always near flames.
When he enlisted in the Army, Charbroil requested a position working with open flames. He got it easily enough, and trained in the fine art of serving as a flame weapon specialist. Charbroil found using fire offensively just as fascinating as he did wielding it as a tool.
His comfort around the stuff got Charbroil recognized by the powers that be, and he was eventually pointed in the direction of the GI Joe team by its mysterious recruiters. Charbroil managed to pass the team's horrible entrance exam, and made it onto the team in no time.
On his very first mission, he was placed alongside several additional new recruits in an effort to keep Cobra from claiming a new chunk of land on the fault line upset by the creation of Cobra Island itself, a mission that Charbroil and company completed successfully.
Charbroil went on to serve as a member of the GI Joe team in excellent standing, even if he was generally avoided in the field (since you know, flamethrower fuel tanks do bad things when they're shot). He was a member of the team until it was deactivated back in '94.
(Historical Divergence)
The Joes weren't inactive for long, however, for Cobra's evil multiplied with no opposing force to keep it in check. While Charbroil wasn't one of the initial Joes to return to active duty with the group, he did eventually make it back in time for the second Cobra Island Civil War.
He remained with the group for a while after this, until it was 'deactivated' a second time. Of course, Cobra simply did the same thing it did previously, and in time the terrorist organization had set off World War III itself, and almost took over the entire planet!
Thanks to Charbroil and his fellows on the GI Joe team, however, Cobra was finally and ultimately defeated. Now, seeing the need for an always-active GI Joe team, the government has kept all of its operatives on full-time, to hunt those Cobras who have escaped justice!
1989 Variations
Costume:
Charbroil's second GI Joe field uniform is a bit more subdued than his first. It is mainly gray in hue, and covers him from head to toe. It is accented by gold stripes down the legs, a gold belt, blue shoulder pads, knee pads, and wrist guards, a blue chest plate, and a blue helmet.
2004 Variations
Costume:
Charbroil's third GI Joe uniform is another asbestos suit. This full body suit is green on top and light green camouflaged on the bottom. It is accented by orange stripes down the legs, dark green shoulder pads, knee pads, and wrist guards, a dark green chest plate, and a black helmet.
2013 Variations
Costume:
Charbroil's fourth GI Joe uniform is a refinement of his second. It includes a dark gray asbestos suit which covers him from head to toe, which is accented with a blue chest plate, knee pads, wrist guards, and gloves, brown boots, and a blue helmet with red eye pieces.
2017 Variations
Costume:
Charbroil's fifth GI Joe uniform is a refinement of his original. It includes a brown asbestos suit which covers him from head to toe, which is accented with a chromed chest plate, knee pads, and wrist guards, neon orange gloves, brown boots, and a steel helmet with red eye pieces.
