Origin:
Like the vast majority of Joes under his command, Duke is a normal human, lacking bizarre mutations, a sorcerous background, or psionic schooling. However, he has wielded a plethora of advanced toys in his GI Joe career, so one could consider him a high tech hero.
Powers:
(none)
Hindrances / Augmentations:
(none)
Equipment:
9mm Pistol (a): in the event that the other hardware he's packing fails him, Duke always has at least one 9mm on hand. He can use this firearm to inflict damage per a +4 weapon in a single shot, or damage per a +5 weapon in a magazine-burning, semi-automatic burst.
Binoculars (w): Duke occasionally carries binoculars on missions, to better spot enemy positions. This set of twin lenses can be used to spy things up to a mile away with ease, and can somewhat enhance Duke's view of people or items within his line-of-sight.
Grenade(s) (i): Duke's always got at least one grenade with him while 'on the job', helping him to blow up heavy opposition that gets in his way. These explosive devices can be thrown to inflict intensity 10 physical (fragmentary) damage to all within near missile distance.
Helmet (s): Duke supplements his field uniform with a helmet, though he doesn't always wear it. Either green or tan in color (to best accentuate his uniform du jour), this item gives him intensity 8 (+2) protection versus physical attacks striking him in the cranium.
Knife (s): Duke always carries a knife, usually housed in a boot sheath. This blade, made from strength 12 metals, can be used to cut through materials of like strength, and allows Duke to inflict +2 melee damage. Sometimes, this is instead a machete (same damage).
Submachine Gun (a): Duke always carries one of these weapons while on a mission. This gun can be fired at an opponent to inflict damage per a +4 weapon in a single shot, +5 damage in a small burst of ammo, and +6 damage in a fully automatic lead spread.
Skills:
Advanced Guns (a): in addition to his skill with standard firearms, Duke has learned how to effectively fire advanced, energy-based weaponry. Whether he's firing a laser pistol, particle beam emitter, mass driver, or some other advanced weapon, he does so at a reduced difficulty.
Boxing (s): quite the fighter, Duke is a veritable master of conventional hand-to-hand combat. As such, he can divide his pre-card play action score between two unarmed melee attacks, the latter of which will occur as a contingent action.
Detective / Espionage (i): having worked with the Special Forces, and then doing work for unspecified intelligence agencies, Duke has mastered this skill over time. He should receive a reduction in the difficulty level of actions applicable to information gathering / mystery solving.
Guns (a): a skill learned in Army basic, Duke later honed it to the point that he can be counted an expert small-arms artillerist. Whether they be standard, semi-automatic, or fully automatic rifles or pistols, Duke uses such weapons at a reduced difficulty level.
Languages / English, French, German, Han Chinese, and Vietnamese (i): Duke could speak several languages before he joined the Army, though their Special Languages School helped him to master many more. He can speak, and presumably write, in all these tongues.
Leadership (w): in addition to his skills as a military strategist, Duke has demonstrated time and time again that he has what it takes to lead men - during battle or otherwise. Whenever Duke is a member of a team, it may add a +1 to any actions it attempts while it follows his direction.
Military / United States (w): as a long-standing member of the United States Army, much less GI Joe, Duke has this talent as a general matter of course. Serving as a convenient origin for his other skills, this talent also describes Duke's inherent knowledge of military procedures.
Contacts:
As a member of GI Joe, Duke can indubitably rely upon his teammates for aid anytime; after all, he's saved their lives enough times to garner their respect. Furthermore, the man has innumerable contacts in military and espionage circles, having worked with both for years.
Calling:
Protector, with a secondary calling of Soldier: Duke has been served his country for a very long time. Whether it is with the Army, various intelligence agencies, or GI Joe itself, Duke fights the good fight against tyranny every day of his life.
Costume:
Duke's original GI Joe field uniform consists of a long-sleeved tan shirt over a green T-shirt, a light brown pair of trousers, a brown set of leather boots, a brown leather belt, a black holster for his pistol, and a green bandoiler to hold various gear.
Personality:
Duke is the ultimate go-getter, and an incredible leader of men. He always gives his all to the fight against the forces of evil and tyranny. He also believes in sharing the danger that he puts his subordinates in, and isn't willing to sit back and let them hog all the firefight.

Story:
Already fluent in English, French, and German upon enlisting, Duke subsequently mastered Han Chinese and Vietnamese upon being sent to the Army's Special Language School. Being so gifted, Duke was a natural addition to the Army's Special Forces.
Which forces, exactly, have yet to be revealed, but he spent time training native South Vietnamese tribesmen in the fine art of war so they could oppose the communists to the north. He also did time running no less than four Special Forces schools himself after his time abroad.
It has also been rumored that Duke was a member of the original GI Joe team, the one that Joe Colton founded under the orders of then-President Kennedy. Nobody but Duke - and perhaps 'GI Joe' Colton - knows the truth of this, and neither are talking.
Regardless, what he did after Vietnam has yet to be revealed, but at some point Duke worked with two men who would later become the Joes known as Flint and Roadblock - they were likely recruited into the Joe team by Duke, in fact, who was well aware of their capabilities.
Duke himself was brought into GI Joe by Hawk, who felt the team needed a good dose of mean in its leaders - and Duke expects more from the Joes than Hawk does. The very first time he saw action as a Joe was during a funeral for the team's former commander, General Flagg.
While the rest of GI Joe was unarmed, they were targeted by a prototype Cobra Rattler, which Duke and Roadblock shot down. Immediately afterwards, Duke and Roadblock were sent to Switzerland to surveil Major Bludd, who had taken the Baroness there for plastic surgery.
She'd been horribly burned in a recent Cobra operation, and Bludd wanted her well since he was smitten with her. However, Duke, Roadblock, and the other Joes sent to assist him (Clutch, Cover Girl, and Snow Job) sprung into action when Cobra Commander himself showed up.
While Major Bludd, the Baroness, and even Storm Shadow escaped this debacle, Duke's Joes managed to capture the Commander, who he was then charged with guarding. He did so by setting up one of the Joe team's prefabricated bases on a remote mountain top.
Storm Shadow nonetheless secured the Commander's escape - at the cost of his own freedom. He regained it after the Joes transferred him to the abandoned Alcatraz penitentiary for safe keeping, as they underestimated his abilities, and he easily escaped.
Duke was put into action soon after, this time to assault Zartan's Florida hideout. He joined Cutter, Roadblock, and Deep Six on the team's new Killer WHALE hovercraft, all of whom were shot up by Destro in a Cobra Rattler during that mess - though the hideout was wrecked as well.
After Deep Six was extracted for medical treatment, Duke and Roadblock helped Cutter dock the WHALE for repairs at a nearby village, though they lost the WHALE to Destro and Firefly after Cutter finished fixing the ship's engine, and were forced to get creative to recover it.
While Cutter and Roadblock went back to the GI Jane for reinforcements, Duke hitched a ride with Wild Bill on his Dragonfly to chase the WHALE down from the air. Though Destro shot the helicopter out of the sky with his wrist-rockets, the Joes ultimately got their new hovercraft back.
Even if the hijacking Cobras ultimately escaped by hiding in the cans of the WHALE's depth charges.
Taking some time to recover from his wounds, Duke next saw action against Cobra when he, Lady Jaye, Flint, Blowtorch, Cover Girl, Mutt, and Junkyard assaulted a home near the Pit that was a suspected Cobra hideout. It was, in fact, the staging base for a Crimson Guard operation!
While Cobra got away, the Joes uncovered clues that something big was up in the Gulf of Mexico. These plans were intentionally left behind by Tomax, Xamot, and Professor Appel, a Crimson Guard scientist, to trick GI Joe into doing their dirty work for them.
You see, Cobra planted a dummy base on the Gulf floor that was emitting sonic waves that killed any fish in their range. This base was sitting on a fault line, and when the Joes dropped enough ordinance to blast it into smithereens, they managed to upset said fault line - and how!
The result of this was the creation of Cobra Island, which Cobra's army of lawyers worked to get recognized as a sovereign nation while the Joes tried to dislodge the Cobra forces upon it. Duke led this mission, but was on the verge of victory when the Joes were ordered to leave.
A minute shy of ultimate victory, Cobra's lawyers succeeded in their task, and as such the Joes were forced out of the new nation. Duke would return to the island during the Cobra Island Civil War, which the Joe team was coerced into participating in by Doctor Mindbender.
Namely, he'd return a stolen, classified device in exchange for their aid. Assisting Hawk in planning and executing the Joes' part in this debacle, Duke took over the mission after Hawk was captured by the Dreadnoks, though Duke ultimately rescued him from those thugs' tender mercies.
This whole operation was for naught, however, for their side lost.
When Zartan assassinated Serpentor in the field, the Cobra faction that GI Joe was supporting collapsed. As a result, the Joe team was suspended and remanded into custody by the Jugglers, a group of generals operating outside the law, that wanted the Joes shut down.
This scheme was ultimately thwarted by several Joes who weren't present on Cobra Island at the time, thanks to Destro revealing the Jugglers' part in this whole mess. Immediately afterwards, Duke and the rest of GI Joe resumed their normal activities.
Duke changed roles after this mess somewhat, becoming the chief drill instructor for those taking the GI Joe entry exam. He was the harshest of taskmasters, and only the hardest of the hard, the most skilled of the skilled, could make it into GI Joe on his watch.
Duke served this role for quite some time, until he was called into direct action again, in the harsh deserts of Trucial Abysmia.
There, on a supposed 'milk-run' mission, Duke lost several Joes under his command when they were captured, and then executed, by a Cobra SAW-Viper. Several more died during their subsequent escape attempt, leaving only Duke, Cross-Country, and Lt. Falcon to avenge them.
A few years later, Duke saw additional action when Cobra assaulted the third Pit complex in Utah. Duke led a successful defense of the facility, and all of its incredibly expensive equipment, when Cobra hit the place with almost everything they had. Again, though, this was a trick.
Cobra didn't actually want to destroy the Pit - that wasn't their primary goal - they were just testing their newest radar suppression technology, an advance of the Python technology they used a few years ago. Duke wasn't having this, though, and decided to strike back.
He led a force of Joes, including Roadblock, Snake-Eyes, Scarlett, and Stalker to Cobra Island, where the team destroyed a large portion of Cobra's remaining hardware on the island; not too difficult, since most non-robotic (BAT) operatives were currently active elsewhere.
Soon enough, though, the team was deactivated by budget cuts, and Duke was one of many Joes suddenly with a whole lot of spare time on his hands. What exactly Duke did with this time has yet to be revealed, but it definitely involved intelligence work.
(Historical Divergence)
The exact agency has yet to be detailed, but for several years Duke worked for an unknown U.S. government spook show that sent him into action all over the world, dealing with threats to national security in some form or another. An encounter with Major Bludd changed this, though.
Learning that Cobra was on the verge of making a huge comeback, Duke enlisted the aid of Snake-Eyes' student, Kamakura, to investigate some leads he had acquired. This young man's work proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that Cobra had returned - and in a big way!
With this knowledge, and Hawk's assistance, Duke managed to get GI Joe reinstated. With several of the team's veterans, along with a larger crew of new recruits, Duke and the Joes have moved to halt Cobra's latest scheme, a diabolical plot involving nano-tech robots.
Once this threat was dealt with, the Joes proved that they were needed against the forces of a renewed Cobra... much to the chagrin of the Jugglers. As such, Duke stayed on to lead the team in battle against Cobra and any other terrorists that threatened the forces of freedom.
Even if his fellow Joes were slowly growing to distrust him. You see, 'black ops' time had given Duke a few secretive habits, and many of his missions involved layers of trickery to confound Cobra. However, Duke eventually stopped this practice, as some of said trickery backfired.
And while most of the Joes still respect him, a few - such as Rip Cord - have issues with Duke these days. However, the Joes are still a team, and they know the stakes if they were to let Cobra achieve their goals. That's why all of them joined the call when Cobra instigated World War III.
Even those disgruntled Joes like Rip Cord. They all answered the call when Duke asked everyone to assemble and fight off Cobra's goons, and with a whole lot of luck, the GI Joe team prevailed, finally capturing Cobra Commander himself, and scattering his forces to the four winds.
With the primary threat defused, it fell onto Duke and his teammates to mop up the Cobra Command's stragglers, not to mention all the terrorists under them who escaped when their leader was nabbed. Of course, Duke is more than ready to answer this challenge with the Joes!

JUMP (v3) (i): for a time, Duke also made use of one of the Joe team's original personal vehicles, the JUMP (Jet Mobile Propulsion Unit), to increase his battlefield mobility. This high tech flight vehicle is described in its own vehicular entry.
Costume:
Duke wore four different uniforms in 2008, three of which were variants on his original, classic outfit. Mind you, the very first of these was in fact that precise ensemble, the specific details of which you can find above.
His twenty-fourth uniform is just like his first, save for the coloration. It includes a light green, long-sleeved shirt over a white T-shirt, Army green trousers, a gray leather belt with green pouches, a gray bandoiler, a green helmet, and brown leather boots.

Heavy Machine Gun (a): usually Roadblock's or Rock 'n Roll's schtick, Duke carried a heavier weapon on him in 2010. He can fire a short burst of lead with this gun to inflict his Agility +6 damage, or open it up full auto to increase that to +7.
Costume:
Duke's twenty-seventh uniform looks like something he'd wear with Night Force. It includes a black vest under black web gear, dark green camouflaged trousers, black leather boots and gloves, a black leather belt, and curiously, a dark green headband.
2011 Variations

Quick-launch Missile Cannon (v2) (i): occasionally, Duke carries a black rocket launcher with him on missions, depending on just what kind of opposition he expects. This laser-guided (+1 to hit) launcher fires missiles that inflict intensity 10 damage to all within near missile distance.
Costume:
Duke's twenty-eighth uniform seems at first a variant on his original. It includes a long-sleeved, yellow collared shirt over a white T-shirt, Army green trousers, black leather boots, gloves, and belts, and metallic blue chest armor and knee guards.
